Engine and gearbox

The Hilux E uses the 1GD-FTV four-cylinder common-rail diesel engine with a displacement of 2,755 cc. In this standard version it makes 130 kW, or about 174 hp, at 3,400 rpm and 420 Nm between 1,400 and 2,600 rpm. Power goes through a 6-speed manual gearbox to a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a switch-type transfer case offering H2, H4 and L4 modes, so it has a proper low range for rough tracks. Together, the manual gearbox and low range let it crawl slowly up steep tracks or through mud while carrying a load, which is what many farm and construction users need.

Size and practicality

The Hilux E measures 5,335 mm long, 1,800 mm wide and 1,815 mm tall, with a 3,090 mm wheelbase. Toyota quotes a minimum running ground clearance of 286 mm, an 80-litre fuel tank and seating for five. The load deck measures 1,525 mm long, 1,540 mm wide and 480 mm deep inside. It rides on 225/70 R17C tyres with steel wheels, which are designed for carrying loads.

Equipment

This is the workhorse of the double-cab range, so the equipment list is basic. Safety kit includes front airbags, a new driver’s knee airbag, ABS and a clutch-start safety system, along with key, light and engine-oil level reminders. Outside, it has halogen headlamps, front fog lamps, a deck guard, a sliding rear window, mud guards and painted front and rear bumpers.

Inside, there are fabric seats in a black scheme with manual adjustment, a heater, side window demisters, a standard speedometer, a 12-volt accessory socket and a coat hook. Toyota’s specification table for this version does not mention air conditioning, power windows or an infotainment screen, so buyers who need these should check with a dealer.

Warranty and booking

Toyota Pakistan says all its vehicles carry a warranty of 3 years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first. Its buyer’s guide lists a booking payment of Rs 2,500,000 for Hilux models other than the Revo.

Who should buy it

There is only one version. In our opinion, the Hilux E makes sense for businesses, farms and contractors who need a tough 4×4 double cab with Toyota reliability and a low-range gearbox, and who do not need comfort features. It costs Rs 950,000 less than the cheapest Revo, the G MT. Private buyers who will use the pickup as a family car will probably be happier paying more for a Revo.
