Battery, motors and range extender

The Hunter is driven only by electric motors: one on the front axle (110 kW, 209 Nm) and one on the rear (130 kW, 320 Nm), giving four-wheel drive. Changan quotes a combined 240 kW (322 hp). A 31.18 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery gives 131 km of electric range on the NEDC cycle. When the battery runs low, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine acts as a generator, and with its 70-litre tank Changan claims a total range of more than 900 km. A Power Boost mode delivers maximum output for climbing and overtaking, and Changan quotes 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds.

Charging

The battery accepts up to 6.6 kW on AC and 41 kW on DC, with a DC charge from 30 to 80 percent taking about 30 minutes. A 3.3 kW vehicle-to-load function with two 220V sockets lets the truck power appliances and tools.

Size and practicality

The Hunter is a large five-seat double cab at 5,380 mm long, 1,980 mm wide and 1,920 mm tall, on a 3,180 mm wheelbase with 220 mm of ground clearance. The cargo bed measures 1,590 x 1,580 x 490 mm, payload is 1,010 kg and towing capacity is 2,500 kg. It uses double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension, disc brakes all round and 265/60 R18 tyres on 18-inch alloys.

Equipment

There is one variant, the REEV Plus 4×4. It comes with front, front side and curtain airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, stability and traction control, hill hold and hill descent control, a 3D around-view camera with recorder, tyre pressure monitoring, cruise control and lane departure warning. Inside are perforated synthetic leather seats with power adjustment and ventilation in front, automatic AC with rear vents, a 7.5-inch digital cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, English voice control and a 40W wireless charger. Outside there are LED headlights, LED tail lamps, front and rear fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding heated mirrors, a bedliner and side steps.

Changan’s website does not publish warranty terms for the vehicle or battery, so check with the dealer before booking.

Which variant to buy

With only one variant, the choice is simply whether it suits you. In our opinion, it makes most sense for buyers who can charge at home and do much of their driving in town on electric power, while still needing 4×4 capability and long range for trips.
