Engine and gearbox

The FAW J5P 420 uses the CA6DM2-42 engine, an 11,000cc six-cylinder in-line diesel with direct injection, turbocharging, intercooling and 24 valves. FAW rates it at 420 hp at 1,900 rpm and 1,900 Nm of torque, the highest outputs in FAW’s Pakistani range. The gearbox is an Eaton ET20109A unit, which FAW lists with 10 forward and 2 reverse gears, and the clutch is a 430 mm (17-inch) Eaton dry single-plate type with hydraulic control and air assistance. FAW lists a top speed of 87 km/h and a gradeability of 37%. The spec sheet shows a fuel consumption figure of 38 without a unit, so we have not used it.

Size and practicality

The Jumbo is 6,793 mm long, 2,490 mm wide and 3,350 mm tall, with 314 mm ground clearance under the rear axle. FAW lists a maximum gross carriage weight of 80,000 kg, the highest of any FAW truck in Pakistan, and a chassis kerb weight of 10,750 kg. The front axle is rated at 7,000 kg and the rear at 32,000 kg. The fuel tank holds 500 litres. It runs on eleven 12.00-20R tyres on 8.5-20 rims with twin rear wheels, a FAW 485 single-reduction rear axle with a 4.625 ratio and a wheel differential lock. Semi-elliptic multi-leaf springs are used at both ends, with upper torque rods at the rear. FAW quotes a minimum steering radius of 15.6 m.

Equipment

The J5P cab is a newly designed cab-over-engine unit that lifts forward and sits on 4-point hydraulic suspension, with seating for three. Brakes are ABS-equipped, with a spring-energy parking brake and an engine brake or exhaust brake as the auxiliary brake. Steering is a recirculating-ball type with hydraulic power assistance. The 24V electrical system has a 1,500 W generator and two 12V 150Ah batteries. FAW lists metallic and solid paint colours but does not name them.

Warranty

FAW’s Pakistani website does not publish the warranty, so ask the dealer for the terms in writing.

Which variant to buy

There is one 6×4 version. In our view, the J5P 420 is for operators who regularly pull the heaviest loads, such as containers, machinery or bulk goods, where its 80-ton rating and 1,900 Nm matter most. For mixed long-haul or tanker work, the J5P 360 is likely to be the more economical choice, so we would compare quotes for both.
