FAW J5M 220 Prime Mover

Engine and gearbox

Both versions of the FAW J5M 220 Prime Mover use the FAWDE CA6DF2D-22 diesel engine, a 6,557cc six-cylinder in-line unit that is water-cooled, turbocharged and intercooled, meeting Euro II. FAW rates it at 220 hp at 2,300 rpm and 770 Nm at 1,400 rpm. Power reaches the road through a FAST 8-speed gearbox with 8 forward and 1 reverse gear and a high and low range, with an Eaton dry single-plate clutch of 395 mm. The rear axle is a FAW single-reduction unit with a 5.28 ratio on the prime movers. FAW does not publish fuel economy figures.

Size and practicality

The 4×2 prime mover has a gross combination weight of 30,000 kg and FAW quotes a payload capacity of 24,650 kg. It has a 3,500 mm wheelbase, a 5,825 mm length, a 4.9 m turning radius and seven tyres, with a top speed of 105 km/h and 20% gradeability. The 6×2 prime mover raises the gross combination weight to 45,000 kg and the payload to 37,400 kg, with a 3,800 + 1,350 mm wheelbase, a 7,325 mm length, an 8 m turning radius and eleven tyres; top speed is 90 km/h and gradeability 32%. Both use 11.00-20R tyres, a 400-litre fuel tank and a built-in coupler for the trailer. The 4×2 is 2,500 mm wide and the 6×2 is 2,490 mm wide.

Equipment by variant

Both versions have full air dual-circuit brakes, a spring-energy parking brake, an exhaust brake, recirculating-ball hydraulic power steering and a double reinforced frame. ABS and air conditioning are listed as optional on both. The electrical system uses two 12V 150Ah batteries. FAW offers metallic and solid paint colours, and the 4×2 page shows white.

Warranty

FAW’s Pakistani website does not publish the warranty for the J5M 220 prime movers. Ask the dealer for the terms in writing.

Which variant to buy

In our view, the 6×2 is the better choice for most fleet operators hauling full trailers between cities, because its extra axle supports a 45-ton combination weight. The 4×2 suits lighter trailers and shorter routes, and its 4.9 m turning radius makes it easier to manoeuvre in yards and city depots. Whichever you choose, we would ask for ABS to be included, because it is optional on both versions.
