Engine and gearbox

The FAW J5P 360 uses the FAWDE CA6DL2-36 engine, an 8,600cc six-cylinder in-line diesel with 24 valves, water cooling, turbocharging and intercooling, meeting Euro II. FAW rates it at 360 hp (267 kW) at 2,100 rpm and lists 1,500 Nm of torque, also quoted at 2,100 rpm. The gearbox is an Eaton Fuller 9JS150T synchronised unit with 9 forward gears (including a crawler C gear) and 1 reverse, with a 430 mm Eaton dry clutch. FAW lists a top speed of 92 km/h and a gradeability of 42%, the best of FAW’s prime movers in Pakistan. No fuel economy figure is published.

Size and practicality

The Tornado is 6,888 mm long, 2,490 mm wide and 2,890 mm tall, with a 3,300 + 1,350 mm wheelbase and 260 mm ground clearance. Gross combination weight is 58,500 kg, and the chassis weighs 8,650 kg. The front axle is rated at 7,000 kg and the rear tandem at 26,000 kg. The 600-litre fuel tank is the largest in FAW’s Pakistani truck range, which should mean fewer fuel stops on long routes. It runs on eleven 11.00-20 radial tyres with twin rear wheels, a FAW 457 single-reduction rear axle with a 4.875 ratio and an inter-axle differential lock. The rear suspension is a 6-rod tandem setup, and the turning radius is 7.7 m.

Equipment

The J5P cab is a steel-welded cab-over-engine design that tilts forward, sits on air-bag suspension and seats three. Brakes are full air dual-circuit with Wabco ABS, a spring-energy parking brake and an exhaust brake. Steering is a recirculating-ball type with integrated power assistance. The electrical system is 24V with two 12V 150Ah batteries and a 1,500 W generator. FAW offers metallic and solid paint, and the product page shows white.

Warranty

FAW’s Pakistani website does not publish the warranty, so ask the dealer for the terms in writing.

Which variant to buy

There is one 6×4 version. Dawn has reported that PSO’s carriage contractors picked the J5P-360 for fuel tanker work. In our view, it is the most balanced choice in FAW’s line-up for heavy long-haul and tanker operators, because it adds ABS, an air-suspended cab and a 600-litre tank over the J5M 280 while costing less to run than a bigger engine is likely to.
