FAW J5M 220 Rigid

Engine and gearbox

All versions of the FAW J5M 220 Rigid use the FAWDE CA6DF2D-22 engine, a 6,557cc six-cylinder in-line diesel that is water-cooled, turbocharged and intercooled, meeting Euro II. FAW rates it at 220 hp at 2,300 rpm and 770 Nm at 1,400 rpm. The 4×2 and 6×2 use a FAST 8-speed gearbox (8 forward, 1 reverse, with high and low range) and an Eaton 395 mm clutch. The 4×4 uses a six-speed FAW CA6TBX085M gearbox, and its sheet quotes 171 kW and 770 Nm between 1,300 and 1,500 rpm, plus fuel consumption of 14 litres per 100 km (about 7.1 km per litre).

Size and practicality

The 4×2 rigid has a gross vehicle weight of 18,000 kg and a payload of 12,250 kg, a 4,770 mm wheelbase, an 8,090 mm length and seven tyres. Its top speed is 105 km/h. The 6×2 rigid adds a third axle for a gross weight of 27,500 kg and a payload of 19,700 kg, with a 4,725 + 1,350 mm wheelbase, a 9,845 mm length and eleven tyres; top speed is 75 km/h. Both use 11.00-20R tyres and a 400-litre fuel tank. The 4×4 has a gross weight of 16,200 kg and a kerb weight of 5,400 kg, a 4,210 mm wheelbase, 240 mm ground clearance, 30 and 25 degree approach and departure angles, 65% gradeability and a 200-litre tank, on 11.00R20 tyres. FAW lists an optional body of 5,400 x 2,300 x 600 mm for it.

Equipment by variant

The 4×2 and 6×2 have full air dual-circuit brakes, a spring parking brake, an exhaust brake, recirculating-ball hydraulic power steering and a double reinforced frame. ABS and air conditioning are optional on both. The 4×4 has dual-circuit air brakes, an exhaust brake, integrated power steering and a cab that tilts forward to 44 degrees, seating two. The 6×2 rigid page lists maroon, yellow and white.

Warranty

FAW’s Pakistani website does not publish the warranty, so ask the dealer.

Which variant to buy

In our view, the 6×2 is the pick for long-haul cargo, since it carries over 60% more payload than the 4×2. The 4×2 suits shorter routes and tighter city streets, while the 4×4 makes most sense for construction sites and rough rural roads. We would ask for ABS to be included in any quote.
