Engine and gearbox

The FAW J5K 165 is powered by a WP4-165E32 diesel engine with a displacement of 4,500cc. FAW quotes 165 hp at 2,300 rpm and 60 kgf·m of torque at 1,400 rpm, which works out to about 588 Nm. It drives the rear wheels through a CA6TB085M six-speed manual gearbox with a 15-inch dry single-plate clutch that is hydraulically controlled with air assistance. FAW lists a top speed of 90 km/h and a gradeability of 30%. No fuel economy figure is published.

Size and practicality

The J5K is 7,502 mm long, 2,500 mm wide and 2,790 mm tall, on a 4,170 mm wheelbase with 245 mm of ground clearance under the rear axle. The rear body length is 5,487 mm. Kerb weight is 5,000 kg, the rated payload is 11,000 kg and the gross vehicle weight is 16,000 kg, with a maximum rear axle load of 11,000 kg. The fuel tank holds 200 litres. The truck runs on seven 10.00R20 tyres on 7.50 V-20 rims, with twin rear wheels. The frame uses punched and riveted side rails with a 237 x 75 x 7 mm main section. The minimum steering diameter is 13 metres.

Equipment

The J5K cab is a cab-over-engine design with an all-metal closed body that tilts forward to 44 degrees for engine access, and it seats three. Brakes are dual-circuit air, with a spring-energy parking brake and an exhaust brake. Steering has hydraulic power assistance. The electrical system is 24V with a 1,500 W generator and two 12V 120Ah batteries. The rear axle is a 385 single-reduction unit with a 4.875 ratio. White is the only colour listed, and there is one version.

Warranty

FAW’s Pakistani website does not publish the J5K warranty. Ask the dealer for the warranty terms in writing.

Which variant to buy

There is a single 4×2 rigid version. In our view, the J5K 165 sits in a useful gap between FAW’s 7-ton Tiger VH and the heavier J5M 220, and its 11-ton payload and three-seat tilting cab suit regional cargo and construction-material work. We would compare its quoted price against both of those FAW models, because the J5M 220 4×2 rigid offers more power and payload if the price gap is small.
