Kia Sportage L overview and our opinion
Hybrid powertrain
The all-new Kia Sportage L is sold in Pakistan only as a hybrid. A SmartStream 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine (1,598 cc, 178 hp and 265 Nm) works with an electric motor of 64 hp and 264 Nm, giving a combined 235 hp and 368 Nm. The hybrid battery is a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion unit, and a 6-speed automatic with shift-by-wire and paddle shifters sends drive to the front wheels (FWD HEV) or to all four (AWD HEV). Kia Pakistan has not published a fuel economy figure.
Size and practicality
The Sportage L is 4,685 mm long, 1,865 mm wide and 1,660 mm tall with a 2,755 mm wheelbase, making it a longer, roomier version of the familiar Sportage shape. Boot space is 586 litres with the rear seats up and 1,872 litres with them folded. Ground clearance is 181 mm, the fuel tank holds 52 litres, and both versions ride on 235/60R18 tyres with 18-inch alloys and a steel space-saver spare. Suspension is McPherson strut at the front and multi-link at the rear.
Equipment by variant
Both variants have six airbags, front, rear and side parking sensors, Kia’s star-map LED daytime lights, a smart key with push-button and remote engine start, dual 12.3-inch curved displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone automatic climate control, a wireless charging tray, 64-colour ambient lighting and Eco, Sport and My Drive modes. The AWD HEV adds snow, mud and sand terrain modes, a Harman Kardon audio system, heated and ventilated front seats, a driver memory seat and a smart power tailgate. Kia lists more than 15 driver-assistance functions, including smart cruise control with stop and go, blind-spot and forward collision avoidance, lane keeping assist and a 360-degree camera, but its comparison table does not confirm which variant gets each one, so check with a dealer.
Price and warranty
Reported ex-factory prices are Rs 12,199,000 for the FWD HEV and Rs 13,299,000 for the AWD HEV. Kia Pakistan’s standard warranty is 4 years or 100,000 km, and its warranty page does not list a separate term for the hybrid battery.
Which variant to buy
Our opinion: the FWD HEV covers most city and highway driving and already has the same hybrid system, screens and core safety kit. The AWD HEV is worth its Rs 1.1 million premium if you drive to the northern areas often or want the ventilated seats, premium audio and power tailgate.
