The GWM Tank 500 is a body-on-frame, four-wheel-drive SUV that Sazgar has assembled locally from CKD kits since early 2026. Both versions use a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and a 9-speed automatic gearbox. For the HEV, GWM quotes a combined 258 kW (346 hp) and 658 Nm.
The PHEV uses GWM’s Hi4-T system, which pairs a 180 kW, 380 Nm engine with a 120 kW, 400 Nm electric motor. Combined output is 402 hp and 750 Nm. Its 37.11 kWh battery gives a reported 102 km of electric range on the WLTP cycle, enough for most daily commutes without using petrol.
The Tank 500 is 5,078 mm long, 1,934 mm wide and 1,905 mm tall, on a 2,850 mm wheelbase, which puts it among the largest SUVs sold in Pakistan. Seating depends on the version: the HEV is a seven-seater, while the PHEV has five seats. A spare wheel is carried on the tailgate. The imported version that went on sale in 2024 ran on 265/60 R18 tyres.
GWM fits differential locks and multiple terrain modes, including Sport, Snow and Sand. It also offers off-road cruise control and a Tank Turn function that helps the vehicle turn in tight spaces. Together with the ladder-frame chassis, these make the Tank 500 a genuine off-roader rather than a soft crossover.
Both versions are listed with six airbags and a 360-degree camera. The driver aids include adaptive cruise control with traffic jam assist, automatic emergency braking (including at intersections), forward collision warning, rear cross-traffic alert with automatic braking, and intelligent parking.
Specification lists for the earlier imported model also mention a panoramic sunroof, wireless charging and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. They also list LED headlamps, front and rear fog lamps, roof rails and powered side steps. Confirm these with the dealer for the locally assembled car.
The Tank 500 HEV costs Rs 20,500,000 ex-factory and the PHEV Rs 22,500,000. The booking amounts are Rs 3 million and Rs 3.5 million. Both locally assembled versions cost less than half the Rs 45 million that was asked for the imported Tank 500 when it launched in 2024.
Our opinion: buy the HEV if you need seven seats, because it is the only version that offers them and it is Rs 2 million cheaper. The PHEV is the better choice for a household that needs five seats and can charge at home. It has far more power and can cover most daily trips on electricity alone, while keeping the same off-road hardware.
