Battery, engine and range

The Deepal S05 sold in Pakistan is a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV). The rear wheels are always driven by an electric motor rated at 160 kW (215 hp) and 320 Nm. Power comes from a 27.28 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery made by CATL, and when that runs low a 1,497cc four-cylinder petrol engine (94 hp, 122 Nm) works as a generator; it does not drive the wheels directly. Deepal quotes 170 km of pure electric range on the NEDC cycle and a combined range of more than 1,000 km with a full battery and a full 44.9-litre tank. DC fast charging peaks at 54.5 kW and takes the battery from 30% to 80% in about 20 minutes, while home AC charging is limited to 6.6 kW. The car can also supply up to 6.6 kW to external devices through vehicle-to-load (V2L).

Size and practicality

At 4,620 mm long, 1,900 mm wide and 1,600 mm tall, the S05 is a compact SUV, but its 2,880 mm wheelbase is long for the class, which Deepal says gives generous rear legroom. Ground clearance is 169 mm, boot space is 492 litres and the rear seat folds 60:40. Deepal also lists 35 storage spaces and a cool box. It rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with 225/60 R18 tyres and uses MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension.

Equipment

Pakistan gets one fully loaded version, the S05 REEV Max. It has six airbags, a 360-degree camera with transparent-chassis view, front and rear parking sensors, tyre pressure monitoring and a Level 2 driver-assistance package that includes adaptive cruise control with lane centring, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping, blind spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert and braking. Inside there is a 15.4-inch touchscreen running on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chip, an augmented-reality head-up display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 50W wireless charger, 14 speakers and 64-colour ambient lighting. Both front seats are powered, heated and ventilated with memory, and the front passenger gets a zero-gravity seat with a powered leg rest. A panoramic glass roof with an electric sunshade and a powered tailgate complete the list.

Warranty

Deepal’s brochure lists a 5-year/150,000 km vehicle warranty and an 8-year/240,000 km battery warranty, subject to terms and conditions.

Which variant to buy

There is only one variant, priced at Rs 9,999,000 ex-factory including freight, which Deepal describes as a limited-time special offer. In our opinion, the S05 makes the most sense for buyers who want to drive mostly on electricity in the city but cannot always rely on finding a charger on long trips, because the petrol generator removes range worries. Owners who can charge at home every night will get the lowest running costs, while those who mostly drive long distances on the motorway will burn more petrol.
