Union Star US 70

Engine and gearbox

The Union Star US 70 is a conventional 70cc commuter motorcycle and the only petrol model in the current Union Star line-up. Its four-stroke, air-cooled OHV single-cylinder engine has a 50 × 49.5 mm bore and stroke and an 8.8:1 compression ratio. Listed output is 6.4 hp at 7,500 rpm and 5.4 Nm at 6,500 rpm. Power goes through a wet multi-plate clutch and a 4-speed gearbox. The listed top speed is 85 km/h and the claimed fuel average is 50 km per litre, which is typical for this class of bike.

Size and practicality

The US 70 is 1,885 mm long, 815 mm wide and 1,190 mm tall, with a 1,210 mm wheelbase and 135 mm ground clearance. Dry weight is about 82 kg. It runs on 17-inch wheels with 2.50-17 tyres front and rear, and has 95 mm of front suspension travel. The 9-litre fuel tank includes a 1-litre reserve, so at the claimed fuel average a full tank could cover roughly 450 km. A single-piece seat, fixed pillion footrests and a standard rear carrier make it practical for family use and for carrying small loads.

Equipment

The US 70 is a basic bike with one specification. It comes in black and red, and retailers list both colours at the same price. Starting method, brake type and lighting are not clearly listed in the sources we found, so check whether the bike you are offered has kick start only or self start, and what brakes are fitted. One website also mentions a self-start version at a higher price, but we could not confirm it.

Which one to buy

Our opinion: the US 70 makes sense for buyers who want low-cost petrol transport and are happy with simple mechanics. However, it is not cheap enough to ignore better-known 70cc rivals such as the Honda CD 70, United US 70 and Road Prince RP 70, which usually offer stronger resale value and wider service networks. Compare on-the-road prices from local dealers before deciding, and remember that a 70cc bike suits city and town riding rather than long highway trips.
