Engine and gearbox

The Foton EST M4 220HP is Master Motor’s medium-duty Foton, offered as a 4×2 rigid truck and a 4×2 prime mover. Both use a Yuchai YC6J220-33 six-cylinder diesel of 6,494 cc with turbocharging and intercooling, rated at Euro III. It produces 220 hp at 2,500 rpm and 760 Nm from 1,400 to 1,700 rpm. The gearbox is a FAST 8JS105T manual with eight forward and two reverse speeds and a high-low range, behind a 430 mm (17-inch) clutch. Master Motor quotes a top speed of 100 km/h and a maximum gradeability of 33.8 per cent. No fuel-economy figure is published.

Size and practicality

The rigid truck has a 5,150 mm wheelbase, an overall length of 8,890 mm, a gross vehicle weight of 22,000 kg and a kerb weight of 5,560 kg. The prime mover is shorter, with a 3,350 mm wheelbase and 6,165 mm length, a kerb weight of 5,200 kg and a maximum gross combination weight of 40,000 kg. Both are 2,462 mm wide and about 2,750 mm tall, run on 11.00R20 tyres and carry a 350-litre aluminium fuel tank. The front axle uses leaf springs with shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar, and the single-reduction rear axle is rated at 12 tons. Master Motor lists body applications including cargo bodies, fuel tankers, refrigerated bodies, truck-mounted cranes, garbage trucks, sweepers, dumpers and wreckers.

Equipment

Both variants get dual-circuit air brakes with ABS and ASR traction control, an engine exhaust brake, spring parking brakes, power steering with a tilting and telescopic column and steering lock, a big sleeper bed and an air-pressure hydraulic driver’s seat. The electrical system is 24-volt. For the prime mover, Master Motor lists the fifth wheel as an optional item, so make sure it is included in your quote.

Price and which variant to buy

No price is shown on Master Motor’s website, so ask an authorised dealer for current ex-factory quotes for each variant. Opinion: choose the rigid truck if you need a single-unit vehicle with your own cargo, tanker or crane body, because its long wheelbase and 22-ton GVW give the most flexibility. The prime mover only makes sense if you already run trailers of up to 40 tons combined weight on medium-haul routes; for heavier long-distance work, a bigger prime mover such as the Auman EST 430HP is the better fit.
