Engine and gearbox

Both D-Max variants sold in Pakistan run on diesel and use a six-speed automatic gearbox. The V-Cross Auto Plus has a 1.9-litre RZ4E Blue Power turbo diesel. It makes 150 PS (148 hp) at 3,600 rpm and 350 Nm between 1,800 and 2,600 rpm, and PakWheels’ first-look review describes it as rear-wheel drive. The X-Terrain has the larger 3.0-litre 4JJ3 turbo diesel, rated at 187.4 hp and 450 Nm from 1,600 to 2,600 rpm, and it has four-wheel drive. None of the sources we checked gave an official fuel-economy figure for either variant.

Size and practicality

Both versions are five-seat double cabins. They are 1,870 mm wide and 1,810 mm tall, with 310 mm of minimum running ground clearance, an 800 mm water wading depth and a 76-litre fuel tank. The launch spec sheets give the X-Terrain a length of 5,265 mm and the Auto Plus 5,300 mm, with a 3,125 mm wheelbase quoted for the Auto Plus. Inside, the Auto Plus cargo box is 1,570 mm long, 1,530 mm wide and 490 mm deep, and it comes with a bed liner and trailer hitch provision. Both variants ride on 265/60R18 tyres.

Equipment by variant

The Auto Plus has:

Outside: Bi-LED projector headlamps, LED fog lamps, LED tail lamps, roof rails, side steps, and power-folding mirrors with turn indicators.

Inside: black leather seats, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents, keyless entry, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel with cruise control, an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, eight speakers and a reverse camera.

Safety: two airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, stability control, traction control, hill start assist, hill descent control, ISOFIX mounts, an alarm and an immobiliser.

The X-Terrain adds:

Seven airbags (front, side and curtain), front and rear parking sensors, automatic Bi-LED headlamps with daytime running lights, a 9-inch touchscreen, Bruno Black leather, an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, and push-button start.

Warranty

When the Auto Plus was launched, its warranty was reported as 3 years or 100,000 km, whichever comes first. Confirm the current terms with your Isuzu dealer before buying.

Which variant to buy

Our opinion: the V-Cross Auto Plus is the better buy for most people who drive mainly in the city and on motorways. It costs Rs 2,600,000 less than the X-Terrain but keeps leather seats, dual-zone climate control, cruise control and smartphone mirroring. Choose the X-Terrain if you need four-wheel drive for rough roads or towing, or if you want its extra airbags and parking sensors.
